  • Oct 9 2009: First-time Homebuyers Program (FHP)

For those of you who might not know what the First Time Homebuyer Program (FTHP) is all about, its a 2006 City initiative where unused (declared "surplus") school land will be reclaimed for affordable housing to help first-time homebuyers purchase a home where they might otherwise not be able to. BQCL supports this plan in principle.

However, with little to no community input (as a result of an 11th hour Klein provincial government "Order in Council" on Premier Klein's last day in office), the City of Edmonton has decided where and what kind of housing projects will be developed.

Within the community of Blue Quill, two such sites have been designated. One is adjacent to (east of) the Blue Quill Community Center (where the toboggan hill is), and the other is in Skyrattler, on Saddleback Road and approximately 114 Street). Details of these locations are shown below:

BQCL Sites for the First-time Homebuyers Program

The Blue Quill Community League believes that with regards to the First Time Homebuyer Program, due process was not and NEEDS to be followed in soliciting input from affected residents of all areas where housing development is planned.

The links below provide more information about the FTHB Program.

How do YOU feel? Contact the City and let them know!

  • Oct 9 2009: Edmonton South LRT (SLRT) Construction

As you know, the City is running the LRT down 111 Street from the University to 23rd Avenue, with new stations at Southgate and at the new Century Park location, where the Heritage bus terminal is now. 111 St. modification has started from 61Ave to 23Ave, with the berm on the west side of 111 St. from Saddleback Road to 23Ave being cut in half in preparation for the widening of 111 St. to accommodate the LRT running down the middle. It is expected that this work will be completed in 2009-2010. For more information, follow the links below.

New! The City is investigating LRT route options from Century Park (23rd Avenue and 111Street) to the City Limits. Click here to find out more!

For further information or to register your comments, please email: lrtplan@edmonton.ca or Phone: Ryan Betker, City of Edmonton Transportation, 496-1792.

  • Oct 9 2009: Century Park

Century Park development is well under way. The old Heritage Mall is coming down (much of it has already), and new buildings are rapidly going up. When finished, this project will see approximately 5000 new residents living in an "Urban Village" where Heritage Mall once stood.

    Century Park Web Site

Here are two documents made available by the City to describe the development that was (now IS) taking place at the old Heritage Mall site.
